Learn How to Take Control of Your Body and Mind by Mastering Breath Awareness

You have the tools you need to take control - We offer a guided, step-by-step practice to becoming the master of your destiny.

first session for free • lifelong results

Concentration

Concentration gathers up the beams of awareness coming through your senses and focuses it into a powerful light that shines into and illuminates your being. Concentration burns through the constant chatter of automatic negative thoughts streaming through your mind and purifies it. The mind becomes still and silent.

Clarity

With clarity as clear and solid as a diamond that cuts through confusion, you realize you are not your thoughts and feelings. You get the perspective of a dispassionate, curious, sometimes amused witness to the emergence and passing away of the occurrences in your internal environment by seeing through the confusion that accompanies jumbled thoughts and feelings.

chain connection

Connection

Connection is the sense of Oneness and integration into what Zen practitioners call the Big Self or matrix of interdependence. Buddhists use the metaphor of the Net of Indra to explain the interconnection, interpenetration and inter-being of all things. Indra's Net extends infinitely in all directions with a jewel standing at each intersection, reflecting every other jewel, which reflects all the other reflections ad infinitum. What affects one affects all.

Meet your instructor

Larry Johanson discovered the Three Pillars of Zen by Roshi Philip Kapleau in his quest for the answers to the big ‘Why’ of his life, and to find meaning and purpose, which preoccupied him in his teens. Later, he had the extraordinary good fortune to meet Roshi Kapleau, who came to Jamaica on vacation. That meeting confirmed that he had found the Path and his teacher.

He later met Roshi Sunyana Graef, a Dharma heir to Roshi Kapleau, in 1995 when she became the teacher at the Toronto Zen center. He continues to deepen his practice under her guidance.

His mission as a corporate trainer is to give organizations and individuals the tools to transform from ordinary to extraordinary and inspire them to act.

Can Breath Awareness practices open me up to harmful influences?

Breath Awareness practices will not open you up to harmful influences. They are safe and natural practices. You definitely will become more aware of how your mind works, the thoughts and feelings that you don’t pay attention to, and this might feel strange at first, but you will get to know yourself in a way that you never did before. In time, you will become more comfortable with who you are, and knowing how  you think and feel will give you the ability to change.

How can counting the breath help me. It seems so simple and childish?

I asked myself the same question years ago when I started and as I continued I learned that counting the breath was a foundational exercise that helped me develop concentration and clear the chatter and clatter of random thoughts flowing constantly through the mind.

You mention Zen Buddhism many times in your presentation. What if I’m not a Buddhist? Can I still practice Mastering Breath Awareness?

I mention Zen Buddhism in my presentation because the course is based on the meditation practices I learned in Zen Buddhism. You can absolutely practice the breath awareness techniques without being a Buddhist. Meditation teachers in the West draw from the practices in the East. They just don’t credit their sources for fear of being accused of engaging in “woo-woo” practices or slipping religion in the back door.

How can I stop my racing thoughts?

This is what the course is about. The breath awareness exercises will help you concentrate and manage the proliferation of thoughts in the mind. Racing and obsessive thought patterns are unfortunately normal patterns for people who don’t have a practice that disciplines the mind.

Do I need special skills?

The only skill required for beginners is the willingness to listen, learn, and be patient with one's progress.
